NEW-YORK, September 10.

On the Evening of Sunday the 2d Instant, his Majesty's Frigate the Pegasus, Captain Stanhope, arrived here from the West-Indies: The 4th instant, he fell in with a French Fleet supposed to consist of about 12 Sail of the Line with several Vessels under their Convoy steering towards Virginia. Capt. Stanhope having 7 Vessels under Convoy, made a signal for dispersing, which was immediately obeyed; 4 of them are since arrived, but the other three are supposed to have fallen into the Hands of the Enemy.

The 6th and 7th following Capt. Stanhope fell in with several French Men of War: the last Time not more than 60 Leagues from the Chesapeake.

On Monday an express Boat arrived from Virginia, with certain Advice of the Arrival of a French Fleet in the Chesapeake.

Tuesday Night another Advice Boat arrived Express from the Earl of Cornwallis, with Dispatches to the Commander in Chief.

She brings intelligence, that the French Fleet in the Chesapeake amounts to 17 Sail of the Line, two of which, with two Frigates, were stationed at the Entrance of York-River, one of them in James River, and the Remainder at the Tail of the Horse Shoe.

Last Tuesday the Zebra fell in with a Fleet (Supposed to be that from Rhode Island) about 60 Leagues from the Capes of Virginia.
