The Spirit Of The Age

Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont

What is this article about?

This editorial sarcastically critiques federal protectionist tariff policies post-Harrison's election, arguing they impose heavy taxes on farmers' essentials like tea and coffee while allowing duty-free imports of coarse wool that undercut domestic producers, benefiting speculators and manufacturers instead of promised wool protection.

DON'T FLINCH,

Farmers! Don't flinch, you that have supported the federal party, and have been promised protection for your wool, and your own peculiar interests. You have your protection now, along with federal ascendency. It is true, that corporation property, gold and gewgaws, such as the AUTOCRAT OF NORTHFIELD and his compeers call necessaries, can come into the country without additional duty. It is true, too, that COARSE WOOL can also be imported without additional tax, and that on tea, coffee, molasses sugar and salt, what the federalists call 'luxuries,' you are compelled to pay an additional tax of not less than THIRTY-FIVE per cent. It is true, that the speculators in wool are protected, and you are defrauded not only as unprotected as you were, but loaded with an enormous additional tax, on all the luxuries of life; all these things are true, and yet the feds have promised you protection, and you have your protection, that same protection for which you have been calling so long. Now, that you have it, don't complain. Let Col. Paine purchase up, duty free, so much foreign wool, that your own will lie on your hands till dooms-day, or compel you to sell it at one-half its value; you should find no fault; you would have it so. Overgrown manufacturers are protected on all hands, while you are left worse than ever. But, then, you know the federal orators all told you last summer that if Gen. Harrison could be elected, and Mr Van Buren put down, you would be protected, and should have at the least sixty-five cents for your wool, and you know Gen. Harrison was elected, giving the federalists the power to protect you as they promised you. You see, too, that they have instituted their measures of protection, and although these measures, as you can see with one eye shut, are calculated to prostrate you beyond all former prostration, and protect your enemies, the speculators, yet it seems to us that you have all you asked for, and can in no reasonable way complain. Pray do not lay this splendid protection at the door of Mr Van Buren, because he is at Kinderhook, and although he has a most complete control over the elements and all the machinery of all the governments that ever existed, yet, we assure you, honestly and candidly, he had nothing to do with this beautiful protection with which you are now protected.
