Abolition break-down in Connecticut

A correspondent of the New York Evening Post writes gloomily of the election in Connecticut. He says:

We feel rather blue over the Connecticut election. We have not been beaten in Connecticut, but then we have won no victory there. The Democrats seem to have a firmer hold of Connecticut than of any other New England State. Coming, as they do, immediately after the Dred Scott decision, the Congressional victories of the Democrats, are a disgrace to the State of Connecticut. She has broken the line of New England. The old excuse of "sloppy weather" is brought forward; but what is a party good for that can't stand an April rain, and which is ever to be at the mercy of the elements?

Our readers cannot but remember how Black Republicanism triumphed in Connecticut last November, sweeping everything before it. Now what a change? A change too at the very heel of the decision of the Supreme Court, in the Dred Scott case, and at a time when every effort was being made by the abolitionists to make capital from that decision. Well may the fanatics of that State "feel blue" at their fate. Well may they say that Connecticut has broken the line of New England--the abolition line--the "higher law" line! As for the "old excuse of sloppy weather," the correspondent of the Post is right when he intimates that a party is good for nothing that cannot stand an April shower, and he might have gone further, and said, that his party is good for nothing in rain or sunshine. It is a detestable party--a party opposed to law, order, and the constitution--a party recognizing, advocating, and permitting negro suffrage, and, as such, will meet yet with inglorious defeat even in, and throughout all New England. There is a "sober second thought," now prevailing at the North, which we doubt not will result in "glorious victory of the National Democracy there, in future elections. Until then sleepless will be the vigilance of the democracy.

Event Details

A correspondent reports gloomily on the Connecticut election results, noting Democrats' strong position in the state compared to other New England areas, immediately after the Dred Scott decision. Previous Republican triumph in November contrasted with this change, blamed partly on sloppy April weather but criticized as party weakness. The article mocks abolitionists and predicts future Democratic victories due to a sober second thought at the North.
