CONGRESS.

The Senate of the United States, this day, commenced the trial of the impeachment of William Blount. The managers on behalf of the House of Representatives, in order to give due form and solemnity to the proceeding, requested that the counsel who appeared in behalf of the defendant should be called to enter upon the record of the court, the authority upon which they acted. Accordingly, Mr. Dallas, one of the counsel delivered to the hon. Mr. Lawrence, president of the court, two letters from Mr. Blount, containing authority for them to act as his counsel. A rule of the Senate having passed, that all decisions in this court should be taken with closed doors, the galleries were thereupon cleared.

The House of Representatives of the United States this day, adjourned to Wednesday.
