Witness Helps Clear Case Of Deaf Mute
NEW YORK (ANP) Rubin Walker, the deaf mute who has stumped New York's jurists, had doubts raised last week when Miss Sarah Lewis, whom Walker is accused of stabbing, told the court Walker was putting on an act. She said Walker can hear.
Miss Lewis told the Court she had been friendly with Walker for some time and frequently they went on beer drinking parties. The stabbing arose when Walker tried to take back $5 he had given Miss Lewis to buy earrings.
The night, they had been out on one of their parties. They went from place to place. Miss Lewis said she did all the ordering after motioning to Walker what the score was. After several drinks, Walker told her—through signs—he wanted back his moolah. When it was not forthcoming, he whipped out a switch blade and proceeded to cut up his girl friend. She wasn't badly injured but when the case was called—she had disappeared. Later, she turned up and testified against Walker—who was ordered held in bail pending further investigation.
The stabbing took place last April 7 on the sidewalk in front of 2294 Eighth Avenue.
