The hard times are responsible for many sad scenes at the station houses, where the usual army of tramps and outcasts has been reinforced by many deserving people thrown out of work and forced to apply to the police for shelter. At an uptown station the other evening appeared a young man and woman, carrying two little children in their arms and travel stained from a long walk, which had made them lame and faint. They said that they were from Bristol, where the closing of the mills had thrown the husband out of work, and that they were walking to New Castle, Del., where they had friends who would take them in. The sad plight of the couple touched the officers, who, after providing them with shelter and food, made up a collection of $5 for them and sent them on their way rejoicing. What is worrying the good people here now is the fact that they can hardly 'take in' the suffering ones already here.
