What a pile the new American Theatre will be!
We are told that already one hundred thousand
bricks have been used in its erection, more than
served to build the entire fabric of the old one.
Indeed it looks as if the whole of the old theatre
could be put into the pit of the rising edifice. Mr
Caldwell has repeatedly said that it shall be opened
in November next, and every thing proves that is
not a vain boast. We hear of several engagements
already made. Clara Fisher, now Mrs. Meader,
and her husband who is extremely clever in the
musical department, are both engaged. Mr Finn,
the acting manager, is now negotiating with many
artists of the first talent in the country. Above
all—the orchestra, which is now making up, will at
once establish itself as the most effective and numerous ever yet assembled in any theatre in this
country. The portion of the theatre to be allotted
to the audience is to be illuminated by means of a
splendid chandelier of 48 gas burners. Mondelli will decorate the house and paint the
scenery. Nothing, in fine, will be neglected to
make the drama in this city take another stride towards perfection. It will be maintained in a style
worthy of the temple which is being erected in its
honor. The founder of the drama in this city is at
the head, and we may judge of what he can do by
what he has already done.
