Full Text
Origin of Parties. The following paragraph is from Mr. Grattan's new historical romance Jacqueline of Holland. The two sects mentioned in it perform an important part in that story but we have no room for anything more than their commencement, and the moral of this publication is left with the reader.
During the contests for power, about the year 1350, between Marguerite of Bavaria, Countess of Holland, and her son William, grand-nephew to Jacqueline, some of their respective partisans, the most powerful men in the country, being at a repast, at which a frivolous argument took place on the question, whether the Hook (fishing hook) might be said to take the Cabeljaw (codfish) vice versa. A serious quarrel was the consequence of the dispute; the different parties affixed on each other the words which formed the matter of argument; distinctive badges were assumed; and the whole population, for full a century following was divided into two desperate political sects.
