Full Text

The next President - Three candidates are already in nomination for the presidency; for the people will observe that their representatives, instead of providing for the common defense and general welfare, are very generously employed in intrigues to take away one of the most essential rights of the citizen - that of electing the chief magistrate of the United States. Amongst all the candidates yet named, we frankly confess, we can see but little choice. - Mr. Madison would probably pursue the political course of his predecessor. This course, in our opinion, has been pursued long enough. It has involved us in difficulties with almost every power on earth - difficulties from which an age of the most wise and patriotic administration, could hardly extricate us. - Mr. Clinton would indeed pursue a different course but on account of his age alone, his administration would probably prove imbecile, with respect to foreign nations; and we should dread to see more power placed, either directly or indirectly, in the hands of his two nephews. In Mr. Monroe's political integrity, we must say, we have but little confidence. - Repub. Crisis.

There has been much caucusing in Virginia, to make out tickets for Electors of president and vice-president. The result is, that Mr. Madison has obtained about two thirds of the votes of the members of the Legislature, and Mr. Monroe the remainder. - Ibid.
