LOCAL NEWS

C. E. Kestevan came up from Minneapolis Tuesday.

C. W. Heinman of Fairfax was in town on business the latter part of last week.

Mrs Peter Larson, the Misses Elizabeth Spike and Esther Speten motored to Detroit Tuesday.

Clarence Turnell left Monday for Williston, N. D. He will also visit a sister at Medicine Lake, Mont.

Mr. and Mrs Olof Peterson of Oakcrest Farm, are spending the week in Duluth and along the north shore.

Milo Priske, student at the University of Minnesota arrived home Sunday and will spend the summer here.

Miss Jane McIver left this week for Minneapolis where she will attend the summer session of the university.

Mmes Geo. Huggett, Margaret Sanders, Adelaide Watson and Miss Hannah Johnson left Sunday for the Twin Cities.

Mr and Mrs Frank Peet of Park Rapids, drove to Mahnomen Sunday and spent the day at the home of his brother, Guy.

Mrs E. Bailey and Mrs G. A. Gunderson will entertain the Congregational Ladies Aid Thursday afternoon of next week.

E C. Pederson and Jody drove to Fargo Friday. They brought back a new Ford sport coupe for a purchaser at White Earth Lake.

Misses Lucille Chilton and Eunice Johnson who attended the State Teachers College at Moorhead are at home for the summer vacation.

Miss Evelyn Fairbanks arrived in Mahnomen a week ago last Saturday from Lawrence, Kansas where she has been attending Haskell Institute.

Miss Alice Tollin and Ted Wold drove to Crookston Saturday returning Sunday afternoon. Miss Tollin left for her home at Anoka Sunday night.

Mrs. Bert Walters and daughter Weltha visited in Mahnomen over the week end returning to Moorhead Sunday where Miss Weltha will attend summer school.

Sterling McGrath arrived here this week from Carleton College for a few days visit with his parents, after which he will leave for Minneapolis where he will be employed this summer.

Mrs B. J. Reck who has spent the past five weeks at the Bratrud Clinic in Warren was expected home this week but complications arose and it was deemed better that she remain a while longer. Mr Reck spent Sunday with her.

Miss Thea Natwick of Ada visited here the first of the week.

Miss Clara Christenson and brother Gilbert of Winger were in town Monday.

Miss Effie Jensen is touring the northern part of the state with Mr and Mrs A. J. Robinson.

Cyril Rumreich, student at the N. D. A. C. at Fargo, came home Saturday for his summer's vacation.

Mrs. Louis Larson, daughter Helen and Miss Mae Sanden drove to Ada Monday returning the following day.

Emil Blasky is supervising the moving of the Wilcox Lumber Co's cement shed from Waubun to Mahnomen.

Wallace Robertson of Twin Valley is spending a few days in Mahnomen with his uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs F. R. Bonn.

Coleman Gill went down to Minneapolis and spent the week end with his family there. He returned Tuesday night.

Carl Monson, accompanied by his son Oren and daughter Elaine, left Sunday morning for a week's stay in the Twin Cities.

B. J. Reck, Judge of Probate was at Detroit yesterday attending an insanity hearing for Judge Hanson who was out of the city.

Mr. and Mrs Leo Wright and family have been spending the week with Mahnomen friends. They will return to their home in Minneapolis tomorrow.

R. E. Schaumberg and family of Beaulieu returned Tuesday night from a week's visit with relatives at St. Paul and Stillwater. They made the trip by car.

W. E. Hoffman and Lyle Glass went up as far as the Canadian line Monday and on their way back stopped in Warren where they visited the Frazer family. They returned to Mahnomen Tuesday.

The Mahnomen Band under the direction of Ray Lee of Twin Valley, gave a splendid concert on the court house lawn Wednesday evening that was enjoyed by a good crowd of listeners in spite of the chilly weather prevailing.

C. W. Fryhofer supervising federal state butter grading, writes G. O. Tveit, operator of the local creamery: "We are pleased to note that a marked improvement in quality of butter over previous shipments. All except five churnings scored 93 grade." It is the sweet cream that counts.

Mr and Mrs A. I. Berg of Twin Valley drove through here Tuesday.

Mrs T. H. Blanchard, Mrs Lee Bailey and Mrs Carl Solberg were in Detroit Saturday.

Rev. John Flint spoke before the Detroit Rotary Club yesterday on "What the Flag Means to Me."

Miss Freda Berquist who has been teaching in North Dakota is spending her vacation in Mahnomen.

Mrs. Ralph Reames came up from Frazee Sunday, spending the day with her mother, Mrs W. J. Reames.

Mrs Fitzgerald of Detroit Lakes spent the first of the week in Mahnomen with her brother Dr. A. P. Eckel.

George Nelson drove down from Thief River Falls Sunday to spend the day with his parents Mr and Mrs Carl Nelson.

August Kettner of Springfield, is in Mahnomen looking after business matters and visiting at the home of his son Ervin.

The University of Minnesota graduated 1400 seniors this year. And still things are not going just exactly right in this country.

Sheriff Urness and Ben Sather drove to St Cloud and the Twin Cities Monday. Two of the sheriff's daughters accompanied them.

Mr and Mrs. John Andera and son Emil left Tuesday morning by car for points in North Dakota where they will visit friends for a few days.

Jacob Neisen was taken to a Fargo hospital Monday for treatment for blood poisoning in his hand, which resulted from a small abrasion of the skin.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J Robinson and the twins left Tuesday for a trip along the north shore of Lake Superior. They will probably return by way of the Twin Cities.

Mr and Mrs Archie Baarstad, Harry Goodrich and Mrs. Goodrich drove to Fergus Falls Friday. Miss Geneva Goodrich graduated from the Park Region Luther College that evening.

Palmer Nelson who has a cream route reports that on Tuesday he traveled 49 miles off the state highway and on that forty-nine miles he was able to travel in high gear but four miles.

The district board of the Fourteenth district, Land O Lakes creameries, comprising twenty-four creameries was to have met at Mahnomen Tuesday but the meeting was necessarily called off on account of the roads.

Mr. and Mrs Marvin Dixon and Mr and Mrs Boyer of Ada, were in Mahnomen Sunday. Mrs Dixon reports her father, Lewis Harris who formerly lived at Snyder Lake as spry as he was when he left this county. He was 89 years of age this spring.

Mr and Mrs Smith and daughters Dorothy and Doris of Lancaster and Misses Ruth and Ruby of Moorhead spent the week end in Mahnomen at the home of their daughter Mrs. T. W Shogren. They left Sunday, leaving the twins, Dorothy and Doris.

Miss Inanda Korsgaarden drove her new Chevrolet to Fargo Sunday. Mr. and Mrs Ed Qual went with her. At Fargo they met Mrs Qual's daughter, Mrs F. M. Bjornstad who with Mr. Bjornstad and little son Alden, came to Fargo to spend the day with them. They returned Sunday evening.

Many Mahnomen radios were tuned in on the Republican National convention yesterday and the day before. Those who heard Frank Murphy of Wheaton, speak on the agricultural plank of the platform and the demonstration that followed, got a little of the convention atmosphere.

H. A. Hamilton of Detroit was in Mahnomen a short time Wednesday while on his way to the northern part of the state. Mr Hamilton is representing the Iron Fireman Stoker Co., of Minneapolis in this part of the state. He has sold to several school boards and other public buildings and to some home owners.

On Sunday, June 17th the St. Petri church, three miles east of Gary, Rev. H. O. Nordby's charge will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. There will be several pastors present to take part who will speak in both the English and Norwegian languages. There will be choir songs and other special singing. Ladies will serve a free dinner at noon. An offering for the mission will be taken up at the forenoon session. A cordial invitation is extended to all.

Lloyd Nelson who has been attending the U. of N. D came home for a few days visit last week and this week he left for Minot.

Miss Evelyn Dahl who has been attending the State Teachers College at Moorhead, spent the first of the week with Mahnomen friends.

Miss Weltha Walters one of the graduates of the Moorhead State Teachers College this spring returned home the latter part of last week.

The Misses Nell Reck and Gladys Nissen came home after graduation exercises at the Moorhead State Teachers College Friday to spend the vacation here.

Mr and Mrs Oscar Anderson, Mr. and Mrs Emil Anderson and children drove up from Alexandria Sunday to visit the Charles Turnell family. They returned the same day.

Ben Pawlak, former resident of Mahnomen was in town Tuesday night. He was driving to McIntosh and stopped in Mahnomen for the night while waiting for the roads to dry up.

Emery Lillemoe and the Misses Beatrice Lillemoe and Gladys Brabley of Winger stopped in Mahnomen yesterday on their way to White Earth where they took in the celebration.

J O. Christenson instructor in the Agricultural School at the U. of M. stopped in Mahnomen to visit at the Oscar Johnson home. Mr. Johnson and Mr Christenson are old friends and have not seen each other in 20 years.

Clarence Sanden and Burtrum Strand who have been spending the spring at Scranton, N. D. doing the spring work on the Schermerhorn Farms land at that place, returned home Sunday. They drove through in one day with a Chevrolet truck.

Misses Helen Larson of Waubun Hills and Ellen Rindahl of Winger both students in the Mahnomen high school last year, went to Detroit Wednesday morning, where they had their tonsils removed by Dr R. A Scott They returned home the following day.

William E. Hoffman superintendent of the Mahnomen schools left yesterday morning for his home at Lyndhurst, Wis. where he will spend a week and then go to Madison for the six weeks summer session of the University of Wisconsin. He will return to Mahnomen about August 15.

The work on No. 30 north of Bejou is about completed. There is little to do but level the new grade. The gravelling contract for this piece of new road and that on 31 which was graded last year will be let at once and work commenced on that very soon Some graveling will also be done on 31 in Norman County.

Mr. and Mrs Charles F. Vondra returned Friday night of last week from an automobile trip to Devils Lake where they visited Mrs. Vondra's two sisters for a few days. Mrs A. F. Anderson, formerly Miss Ardis Johnson returned with them and will spend a couple of weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs George C. Johnson of Pembina.

E. Ellsworth returned Sunday evening from a week's sight seeing trip through North Dakota and Montana. He was accompanied by R. F. Porteous of Newfolden, a former resident of Mahnomen. He traveled over 2200 miles during the week, making 460 miles in one day of 14 hours. Former Mahnomen people whom he met at different places were Wm and Otto Larson and R. F. Spencer. He had a nice trip and fell in love with some of the country.
