We were informed the other day that a person who had been employed in a manufacturing establishment in this vicinity, recently applied for the situation of a Steward on board of the sloop of war Preble, now fitting out at this place. He stated, as the cause of his application, that he had been given to understand by the agent or agents of the establishment, that in consequence of the hard times for business, owing to the policy of the Administration, that the company would shortly have to suspend operations and would not be able to afford him employment. He was favorably received by the officer to whom he applied, and the emoluments and duties of the station he asked for, were pointed out to him. He had a day or two to consider the subject, and finally returned, stating that his employers, on ascertaining that he could find employment elsewhere, had finally agreed to give him permanent employment and good wages.

There needs to be very little comment on the above. It is one of the thousand-and-one miserable and contemptible schemes of the opposition to get up a panic among the laboring classes about low prices of labor and nothing to do. The above story is no fiction ; we have the word of a gentleman of high respectability to substantiate the facts.
