To make sure that there is no mistake about it, the whole giant family is again trussed out, to show that this eighteen-footer was no way remarkable for size, after all. Thus we are assured that there was a gentleman in Rouen, in 1530, who measured nearly eighteen feet in height; that near the same city a skeleton was found, in 1850, whose skull held a bushel of corn, and who was fully nineteen feet high; that Ferragus, slain by Orlando, nephew of Charlemagne, stood twenty-eight feet; and, finally, that a skeleton was found near the castle in Dauphine, in 1823, twenty-five and a quarter feet long, ten feet across the shoulders, and five feet from the breast-bone to the back. In such company as this, Chang, the little Chinaman, might play the part of Tom Thumb.

William Thompson excavates a giant skeleton measuring 18 feet, with helmet and sword, under a mound near Oil City. Compared to other giant reports from Rouen (1530, 1850) and Dauphine (1823), plus legend of Ferragus at 28 feet, to downplay its remarkability.
