Non-Union Men Asked for More Pay and Chicken to Eat.
From the Savannah Press.

One of the interesting stories why the non-union machinists quit the Seaboard a day or two ago is being told. It is said on good authority that the non-union men went to the officials of the road and told them that the fare they were living on was so poor that they could not stand it. The officials asked them what they would have in addition to the fare then served. The list made out contained among other things fried chicken for breakfast, an assortment of vegetables for dinner and beefsteak for supper.

The men stated that they could not get into town to get what they wanted, and that they had to have the things named or they would quit. They also said that they could not work longer for $2.75 per day and that they must have $3 a day. When they got through enumerating their wants the official who had patiently listened to them nearly dropped out of his chair in amazement and could only gasp that they could quit, which they did at once. The story was fully confirmed by the non-union men this morning, who stated to a Press representative that they would leave the city tonight for other fields. They say that in future they will fight shy of points where strikes are on.

The blacksmiths employed at the Seaboard shops quit yesterday afternoon and now only the two German boilermakers remain.

The officials are apparently not worrying, and say they are getting along all right.
