LOCAL DEPARTMENT.
An Outrageous Assault.
A man named A. Goffin was examined yesterday before Jas. T. Walker, Esq., on a charge of having, on the evening previous between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock committed an assault on a young man named Felvez, with a slung shot, with intent to commit murder. The witnesses swore that Felvez, who is a young man, of rather delicate appearance, went into the house of Mrs. Seecrost, to get some victuals; that while there eating the defendant came in, and without any provocation whatever, and before a word had been spoken by either of the parties, struck Felvez on the head with a slung shot, causing a fracture of the skull into which Dr. Hallock thrust his finger near an inch. The opinion of the physicians attending was at the time, that the wound was mortal, and even now though, the boy is going about, they consider his situation critical. Goffin had been to the house earlier in the evening, at which time he exhibited a slung shot, and declared his intention to "clean out" any person he found there on his return. He was required to give bail in the sum of $500 for his appearance at the next term of the Circuit Court, and in default was committed to jail.
