Issuance Of Old Age Assistance Was Held Up By Delayed Organization

OLYMPIA, July 9--Despite optimistic predictions, the first old age pension check probably will not go out of the state public welfare department until about July 10.

Officials of the pension division had said about 6,000 checks would be sent out by that date.

Red tape in getting pension machinery underway was blamed for the delay in putting first applications through the mill. After the first few are approved, it was expected the machinery would operate more swiftly and the 50,000 applications, more or less, would be acted on with more dispatch.

One reason for the state's entering into its old age pension program slowly is that officials here are waiting to see how much money the revenue bill, including the sales tax, is going to bring in.

Since pensions will be paid out of the state general fund, which receives 19 per cent of revenues from the $35,000,000 tax bill, state authorities want to be sure they aren't going to bankrupt the state by too vigorous and early a distribution of pensions.
