SECRET SERVICE MONEY.

The democrats affect a particular abhorrence of any appropriations for secret services : and yet they have insulted the memory of Dr. Franklin with their praise, although they perhaps were acquainted with the circumstance mentioned in the following extract. If they were not, still it will doubtless be found that hereafter they will be as little sparing of their dinted eulogies with respect to him as ever :

" During the doctor's residence in France he expended in secret services the immense sum of thirty thousand dollars. When called upon by the proper authority to give an account of the manner in which the sum was expended, the doctor in his usual laconic style, replied, " gentlemen you must not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn."--U. S. Gazette.
