Tank Contract
Award of a $119 million order for 900 medium tanks to the government-owned facility at Newark, Del., has been protested by Auto Workers Pres. Walter P. Reuther.
The Delaware facility is operated by Chrysler Corp. Most of the order will go to producing tank bodies with some $30 million earmarked for engines and other parts made in Muskegon, Mich.
Reuther asked Defense Sec. Charles E. Wilson to review the contract award and also requested Labor Sec. James P. Mitchell to declare Detroit an area of substantial labor surplus.
The AFL-CIO vice president said that the motor capital has had unemployment of more than 6 percent, the figure which determines a distressed area by Labor Dept. standards. High car inventories in dealers' hands and the approach of the 1957 model production end indicated, Reuther said, 'that the situation will get worse before it gets better.'
