Full Text

One of the first women to whom a place was given in the Treasury Department is Sophie Holmes, a colored woman who, before her promotion, was engaged to sweep the floors in the building. When sweeping one of the rooms on one occasion she found a box containing $50,000, and, not daring to trust it to the night watchman, she stood guard by it herself until relieved by General Spinner himself at 1 o'clock in the morning. Another time she found $80,000, which she promptly returned to the officers of the Treasury. For her honesty she has received for more than thirty years a salary of $50 a month.
