The Wilmington Pirates, playing their first exhibition game at home, defeated the New Bern Bears, 13 to 10 in a somewhat ragged baseball game at Legion Stadium last night.
Emory 'Lefty' Hewlett, a local lad, making his debut with the Corsairs hurled the first five innings and allowed four hits. He was relieved by Bob Weatherly, who just arrived in camp Monday morning. Weatherly completed three innings and was touched for three bingles. Fred Gainey took over in the ninth stanza for the locals and gave up two hits.
The Coastal Plain's team started the scoring in the first inning when they pushed across a single tally on two hits. Maloney, first up, singled and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Jake Daniels singled to right and Maloney scored.
The Pirates came back in their end of the first stanza to add five markers. Four hits, including a double by Harry Bridges, a hit batter and a base on ball all added to five tallies.
The Bucs came back in the third to add three more on three hits and a couple of hit batsmen.
Again in the fourth the Buccaneers crossed pay dirt five times. This time they combined two hits, two walks, two hit batters and a fielder's choice to account for the markers.
The Coastal Plains aggregation added one in the fifth and sixth and came back strong in the eighth to tally three runs. In the ninth the New Bernians jumped on the bandwagon for four runs.
The leading hitters for Wilmington were Bill Benton with 2 for 4; Muscemeci, speedy shortstop also collected two for four and Joe Muscovitch, center fielder, clouted out a pair in three trips at bat. Bob Steckel, who started the game at third base scored three runs without an official time at bat. He was walked twice and hit by a pitched ball in his three appearances.
Maloney with two for four set the pace for the visitors.
It was announced that the Pirates will play the Bears again Thursday night at Legion Stadium.
A large crowd was on hand last night to see the Buccaneers open their exhibition slate at home.
