That Tennessee is to have a busy year in railroad building and general repairing seems a certainty, for other roads than the 'Frisco system have designs on the great coal fields of the Cumberland Mountain districts.
The information comes from Washington through good authority that the Southern Railway has extensive plans to carry out this year that will do much toward developing the great coal section between Nashville and Knoxville.
It is said that the road has already let contracts for the building of its own line from Stevenson, Ala., to Chattanooga, and when the road is completed will no longer use the line of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis, which it has been using for years.
In connection with this move it is also said that the Southern has also arranged to build one or two important lines into the coal fields near the route of the Tennessee Central from a point near Chattanooga. The most important, it is said, will run from a point west of Chattanooga to within a few miles of the terminus of the two lines of the N. C. & St. L. and cross the Tennessee Central about forty miles west of Harriman. From this line, so the story goes, several short lines will be built to connect with the mining districts on both sides of the main line.
While the company has not announced its purpose officially it is said that the lines to be built in Tennessee this year will have about 175 miles and most of it through country not reached by railroads at present.
The coalfields of the Cumberland Mountains seem to be attracting attention from all sources and railroad and coal men say that the development of the country has only just begun. Many new mines are being opened every month and the demand for Tennessee coal has become general. The roads now reaching into the coal fields are having all the business they can handle and the general development this year, it is said, will be greater than was ever before known in this state. - Nashville American.
