Full Text

A Monstrous Lie!

It is stated upon good authority that the Provost Marshals receive ten dollars of every 300 that is paid in as commutation. This, in addition to their salary, &c., &c., &c., makes quite a fat little sum for men who never were able to "earn their salt." Take this District, where some 800 have paid commutation, the commission of 3 1-3 per cent., and the $1800 salary, gives the snug little sum of $9,500 per year.-Age.

The above is simply a lie-known to be so by the reckless and unprincipled pen that wrote it. The Provost Marshal's pay is simply that of a Captain of Cavalry without one dollar's perquisite in any direction.

A claim states that Provost Marshals receive ten dollars from every 300 dollars in commutation payments, plus salary, yielding high income in the district where 800 have paid, but this is declared a lie, with their pay being only that of a Captain of Cavalry without perquisites.
