Black Rhapsody
By George M. Coleman

(A poetic sketch of the Negro's struggle from slavery to his keen search for truth and equality, written especially for Negro History Week.)

Part One

Bleak heaven cried aloud in shameful torrents,
Dark magic of its anger chilling, freezing all
Who were not sheltered from its path
The naked black man stood with frightened eyes;
His heart exposed, his humble spirit
Unprotected before this age old wrath.
In chains they took him to a new born land.
In chains, they beat him, lashed his arms,
in back his hand;
His children sold to others, His wife raped
Until she bore in shame a half-breed baby;
The lust of some forgotten white fulfilled.
