Full Text

When we are standing in our hardy flower garden, in May or June, observing the handsome blooms of our peonies, with their glorious range of color, we should remember that we are looking at a flower whose history runs back nearly fifteen hundred years, at which time it had already become the favorite flower of the Chinese emperors and the theme of poets and painters. The tree peony links its name with that of gods and heroes, for when Paeon, a physician, healed with the roots of this plant the wounds of the god Mars, it received from him the name Paeonia, which has been given by Botanists to the entire family.—Joseph H. Sperry in The Countryside Magazine for September.
