NUTRITION WORK IN RURAL SCHOOLS

Mothers' meetings will be held by Miss Snell, Red Cross Nutrition worker, at the following schools next week: Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 26, at Mt. Carmel; Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 27, at St. Anne's; Thursday afternoon, Aug. 28, at Short Mountain; Friday afternoon, Aug. 29, at District 68. Miss Snell will be at these schools at 2 o'clock for work with the children. Mothers are welcome at this time but the talk on nutrition to the mothers will follow this. Teachers will send home notice by the children as to the time for the mothers' meetings.

The children of twenty-five schools have been weighed and measured and have received one or more nutrition lessons during July and August. The following are the schools into which the work has been taken: Mt. Carmel, Freeman, Lone Star, Mt. Vernon, New Hope, New Liberty, District 68, Zenias' Chapel, Stroupe's Chapel, Short Mountain, Core Shaver, St. Anne's, Johnson's Chapel, Burnett Springs at Corley, Salem, Rob Lee, Mount Olive, Barnhill, Mt. Pisgah, and the children attending the singing school at Lone Gum.

The least amount of underweight was found in District 68 school—only 8 per cent of these children are as much as 10 per cent underweight. Liberty and New Hope schools stand second. The greatest amount of underweight is in the Paint Rock and Mount Carmel schools. In each case half of the children were 10 per cent or more underweight at the first weighing. In those schools in which the children have been reweighed those in Short Mountain school made the greatest improvement at first but at present Freeman is ahead—every child who was present for the weighing have made a gain except three. One of these is about normal anyway and the other two are above average. This is the time of year that it is easier for children to make gains and if they fail to do so there is some cause for it.

During Miss Price's absence, Miss Snell attended the club meeting of Route One Club at Mrs. Roy Hixon's home. A talk on food was given in which the ladies present took part in the discussion. After the business session all were served watermelon and enjoyed a social time.

Miss Snell's work closes August 31. If anyone wishes to consult her on any matter she can be reached by calling Paris, phone 47.
