East-West All-Stars Tangle at Chicago

CHICAGO.—(Special)—Negro baseball's greatest attraction—the annual East vs. West Classic—will be played at Comiskey Park Sunday, Aug. 22.

The top talent from the six-team Negro American League, which sponsors the big game, will be pitted against each other, with players from the Kansas City Monarchs, the Memphis Red Sox and Louisville Clippers comprising the West squad, and the East will be made up of players from the Indianapolis Clowns, the Birmingham Black Barons and the Detroit Stars.

Two outstanding names in baseball, Oscar Charleston, one of the greatest if not THE of them all, and John (Buck) O'Neil have been selected by Dr. J. B. Martin, league prexy, to manage the two squads. Charleston is currently managing the Clowns, and O'Neil the West.

The West, incidentally, won last year, 5-1, under O'Neil's handling for its second straight and 13th in the 21-year-old series.

Selection of the top stars in the circuit for the Classic is now underway by the club owners, managers and coaches.

Most of the top Negro stars now performing in the major leagues have played in the Classic, where they first attracted the attention of talent scouts.

Last year's outstanding performer, Ernie Banks, shortstop of the Kansas City Monarchs, was signed several weeks after the Classic by the Chicago Cubs in the National League for whom he continues to star afield and at bat.

It was reported that the K C. club was given $20,000 for getting Banks' signature.

Classic tickets are scaled at $3 for box seats, which are the only reserved seats; $2 for grandstand and $1 for bleachers. Tickets went on sale on Monday, Aug. 2, at the Grand Hotel here, located at 5026 S. Parkway avenue.

They'll be on sale at the Grand up until Saturday, Aug. 21.

Those desiring to obtain tickets by mail can do so by wiring, phoning or writing Dr. C. J. Troy care of Grand Hotel. Send money orders, with a self-addressed envelope and the number of tickets requested.
