We have been informed that the only hindrance to the Winston and Mocksville Railroad, heretofore, has been a debt of $17,000 incurred on the North Carolina Midland. It is now said that Col. A. B. Andrews has made a satisfactory settlement and that the road will be built at once. If this is so, and we see no reason to doubt it, Winston-Salem will soon be one of the largest railroad centres in the State. It is said the Mocksville road is only part of the line, to run from some point in Virginia, via Winston and Mocksville, through to Statesville, there to connect with the A. T. & O., the little road with the big name, between Statesville and Charlotte.
The Winston and Wilkesboro road is being pushed right along. Hands at both ends are making the dirt fly and next month will see a still larger force at work.
Just here let it not be forgotten that the Roanoke and Southern is now being surveyed and that all the stockholders are confident that it will be built.
As examples of how property is advancing, we give the following pointers:
Two gentlemen within the last month bought small lots at $225 each. They have already sold them for $300 each.
Another lot was bought at $128 and changed hands the same week at $300.
Still another--a residence, was sold within the past sixty days at private sale for $2,800. Today the buyer refuses $3,500. These are only a few of many similar advances.
Within the past three months we have seen real estate steadily advancing, some of it from twenty-five, fifty, one hundred--on up to two hundred per cent.
These are facts that can be proved at any day, and they give an idea of how the town is progressing.
Talk about Birmingham, Anniston, and the mushroom cities further South? We believe no field offers as good, safe investments as some cities in North Carolina.
There isn't quite the rush here, but there is more solidity, more steadiness and no danger of a collapse.
The Twin-City sends greetings and gives a welcome to the world. She has enterprise and she has money, but she wants more. Earnest, energetic men can find employment here, and there is no lack of profitable investments for the wealthy.
There is before this town a future, bright, prosperous and happy, and those who come first, fare best.
