Being Groomed;
Davis Director
The high school band, under the direction of Irshal Davis, made its first public appearance at the Browning-Shelby game of the district tourney.
A native of Kansas, Mr. Davis received his degree from Baker University and did graduate work in music at the University of Montana.
With a membership of 30, Mr. Davis' high school group rehearses daily. At present it is being groomed in programs to be given at the spring music festivals at Havre and Conrad.
Having arrived the latter part of November to assume direction of the band, obviously, Mr. Davis has not been availed the desired time in which to make the progress he would have liked. Yet the headway of his musicians under the circumstances has been encouraging. Nevertheless.
Included as an accessory of the band are five majorettes and a drum major.
The group rehearses under Mr. Davis Tuesday evenings. A second weekly rehearsal is with the band. Several public appearances have been made by this group.
Other musical groups include sixth, seventh and eighth grade bands. All three are beginner groups and rehearse daily. By borrowing instruments from the Boarding School each beginner has his own instrument.
Their first public appearance will probably be at the spring concert.
As soon as a beginner is ready he is invited to join the senior band. Beginning next fall the high school band should be approximately 60, Mr. Davis said.
Under the present system it is possible to have feeders coming up all the time for the senior band.
There are five fifth grade students taking private instructions from Mr. Davis as regular band is not offered below the sixth grade.
