Full Text
As I muse at the door of this dwelling,
Where my life is by Destiny thrown,
In my heart there are dreary thoughts welling,
For I sit in the darkness alone.
In the hall there is laughter and singing
Naught of grief have those careless ones known
But I hear ghostly mem'ry bells ringing,
While I sit in the darkness alone.
There are eyes into other eyes beaming;
There are hearts of which Love makes a throne;
But for me, only dreariest dreaming
I must sit in the darkness alone!
In the morn, brightest hopes for my gaining
In the noon of my life all are flown;
For the sheaves, only leaves are remaining,
And I sit in the darkness alone.
Blessed Christ, Thou wert lonely so often,
And thou hearest each heart-broken moan
Help me serve Thee, my sorrow to soften,
As I sit in the darkness alone.
