I discover in your paper of July 1st that "the Mechanics of Carlisle, Pa. lately held a meeting upon the subject of the injury they sustain by the quantity of Manufactured articles brought into the borough for sale by the Merchants of the place. A Committee was appointed by the former to remonstrate with the latter, upon the practice; and the Merchants expressed a willingness to forbear importing such articles as could be made in the borough as substantial, fashionable, and cheap, as in the cities."
Now, Messrs. Editors, I would respectfully request, through the medium of your columns, that the mechanics of this place have a meeting at some early day for the purpose of taking the same subject into consideration. If work as "substantial, fashionable, and cheap" can be manufactured here, as the same kinds can be done elsewhere, and withal, in sufficient quantities to supply the demand, I do not see why we are not entitled to the preference.

Main Argument
the writer urges local mechanics to hold a meeting to address merchants importing manufactured goods that could be produced locally, arguing that if local work is as substantial, fashionable, cheap, and sufficient in quantity, it should be preferred over imports.
