At about two o'clock this morning (10th)
the large brick planing mill of John L.
Davies, corner of Fourth and Harrison Sts.,
Davenport, was discovered to be in flames.
By three o'clock, the entire establishment,
with all its valuable machinery, was totally
destroyed. There had been no fire in the
building since Saturday last, and no doubt
exists but that the conflagration was the
work of an incendiary. In fact, the parties
who first arrived at the scene, testify that
the sidewalk was blazing with kerosene.
And even when the engines arrived, and
commenced operations, the hose of the Fire
King was cut by some candidate for the
State Prison. By the exertions of the Department, a large amount of lumber surrounding the premises was saved. Mr. Davies sustains a loss of $20,000, without insurance.
Mr. U. N. Roberts had $800
worth of sash and doors in the second story,
which were destroyed without insurance.
