Full Text

Extract of a letter from New-York, dated Aug. 22.

"I have but a moment in which to tell you what I have to say. It is said the enemy are now attempting to land on Long Island. There is a smoke there, from whence a General Officer told me he concluded that our people were burning dwelling houses, barns, grain and hay, for which orders have been for some time issued in case the enemy should attempt to land there. He told me they had certain intelligence that the enemy could not remain on Staten Island, and they could not return to England; they were therefore under a necessity of attacking. They are expected here this day if the wind should favor; it is now ahead. Last night was the most dismal I ever saw. The Almighty appeared in terrible majesty. The sharpest and almost incessant lightning, from darkness thick as Egyptian, and accompanied with dreadful thunder, formed a most awful scene. A New-York Captain and 2 Lieutenants were killed in one tent: the Centinel was struck deaf and dumb, and still continues so. A Private in town was killed."
