ALDERNMEN VOTE A CHANGE IN LOCATION.
First Ward Will Have None—Mayor's Veto of Kimberly Avenue Bridge Damages Order Sustained—Revised Ordinances Adopted.
The regular meeting of the board of aldermen for April was held last evening. City Clerk Norris submitted a communication proposing the adoption of the ordinances in the revised form submitted by him be accepted. The board voted to do so. The ordinances as accepted last evening form a complete compilation of the ordinances as previously revised and adopted by the board. The petition of James Hillhouse for a layout of streets on the Hillhouse property which it gives in full in another column was referred to the committee on streets. Mayor Studley submitted his veto of the order passed by the board on March 6, ordering the payment of damages assessed as a result of the construction of the Kimberly avenue bridge. The mayor assigned as reasons for his veto, first, that there was no appropriation out of which the damages could be paid, and second, because the mayor considers that the sum assessed is excessive. The veto was sustained. A petition for an additional appropriation of $450 for the Soldiers' monument, which is to be erected in Broadway, was laid on the table. Alderman Langley advocated a reconsideration of the former vote on the placing of the voting machines. Alderman Langley was opposed to the selection of the wards in which the machines are to be placed. The motion was carried. Alderman Spreyer proposed the placing of one machine each in the First, Third, Fifth, Seventh and Ninth wards using them in conjunction with the ballot box. Alderman Langley moved that two be placed in the Fifth ward, the remaining in the Tenth. An amendment to place ballot boxes in the wards with the machines was lost. The motion of Alderman Langley was carried 5 to 4. So the machines will now be placed two in the Fifth and three in the Tenth ward.
