Full Text
This Court and that of Great-Britain have agreed, by the Convention signed the 14th of last Month, that the Article relating to the South-Sea Company shall be settled in a particular Negotiation, after we have received the necessary Eclaircisemens for verifying the Pretensions of that Company. This is the State of the Case: In the Year 1737, Sir Thomas Fitz-Gerald, the Spanish Minister at London, having settled Accompts with that Company, there remained a Ballance of Sixty Thousand Pounds Sterling due to the Catholick King; the Company refused since to pay that Sum on Account of the Difficulties started concerning the dispatching of the Schedules. By the Convention signed at London the 9th of September last, it was stipulated, that his Catholick Majesty Should give the two Schedules that were not granted in 1717 and 1727. As the Company pretend that they have suffered great Damage on these Occasions, they demand that, besides two Schedules, they keep the 60,000l. being the Ballance due to Spain, as an Equivalent for their Losses; and moreover, that his Catholick Majesty should indemnify the Owners of the Ships taken by his Guarda Costas. This is the Article which Sir Thomas Fitz-Gerald has had Orders to refer to a particular Negotiation. The King is willing to grant the two Schedules of which the Company was deprived in 1717 and 1727; but we are assured that it is upon the following Conditions, viz. that the 60,000l. which the Company owes him shall be paid in England, according to his Order; after which his Majesty will remit 80,000l. or 100,000l. to indemnify the English Merchants for the Capture of their Ships; but that the Money Shall be paid in the Places where the Ships have been detained.
