The New Party.
Satisfied that the so-called Republican party has lost the confidence of the people, and can never obtain the ascendency in the National Government, the leaders are casting about for a new party—and a platform has been put forth as a feeler, for a People's Party. One of the planks in this new party is as follows:
8. For the protection of the ballot box, we are in favor—First, Of preventing the landing upon our shores of foreign paupers and criminals: Second—Of withholding the right of suffrage from all who are not native or naturalized citizens of the United States: and Third. Of requiring of the naturalized an extended term of residence within the limits of the United States after naturalization, before exercising the elective franchise.
There can be no objection to prohibiting criminals from landing upon our shores; but considering that many of the forefathers of the leaders of this new party, had to be sold for a term of years to pay their passage here, it seems a little curious that they should be so opposed to letting the poor foreigner seek a fortune in this land of Liberty. The balance of the above plank is purely a Know Nothing gull trap.
The following are the last planks in the new platform:
13. We are opposed to the present system of nominating candidates for public office, and would have the people more immediately and directly select their candidates, and nominate and elect—instead of self seekers and demagogues—men honest, capable, experienced and practical.
4. To remedy existing evils, and prevent disastrous consequences resulting therefrom, we would build up "The People's Party of the Union" upon the principle therein before stated, eschewing all sectional questions, uniting upon those purely national, and admitting into said party all citizens who openly avow the principles, opinions and policy set forth in the foregoing declaration.
By the above it is easy to be seen what is up. The nominations of candidates will all be made in the secret councils of the order—and be paraded as the spontaneous outbursts of the People. Bah! It is too late for such foolery again to succeed. The good old Democratic party was never stronger than at this moment—and thousands of young men are strengthening it every day!-Coshocton Democrat.
