The guild movement which started in America 25 years ago is raising the standards of production in all the arts and crafts which have accepted its method of operation, according to Frank Gardner Hale, dean of the Boston Guild of Goldsmiths, who has an exhibit in the Art institute this month.
"The guild movement is a modified restoration of the medieval guild system and under it craftsmen are required to hit a much higher standard in workmanship than is possible under a purely commercial, competitive system," Hale said.
The Leopold Seyffert collection of drawings and a collection of oil paintings by Karl Kraft, Chicago, is in the west gallery with the Hale collection of jewelry.
Yesterday the institute formally accepted Sincerity, which is a bronze sculptural portrait by Fix Masseau, Paris. It was presented as a gift by friends of the late Simon L. Stein.
