Travel in Syria Unsafe.

Washington.-Brigandage is so common near Smyrna, Syria, that Americans have appealed repeatedly to the American consulate there for protection in the licorice root fields and tobacco plantations adjoining the city, and the foreign population is moving into the city from the suburbs because of the fear that the brigandage which has been visited only upon Ottoman subjects so far will be extended to the foreign populations. Americans have been advised that travel in the interior is unsafe.
