NEWBURY-PORT, June 26.

The lightning, of last Tuesday evening, struck the porch of the new meeting-house in Marblehead. The damage is considerable. What is most remarkable is, that the injury received was contiguous to the electrical rod. Some account for it by supposing that the rod was not capable of confining so large a body of lightning as struck upon the points at this instant. However, this must be left to the decision of the genuine pupils of Franklin.

The neighbors say, that, according to all appearances, a large ball of fire fell upon the rock before the porch and rolled down the street. Very large hail-stones fell at the same time. The pitch and tar on the platform of the belfry were thrown into a flame, and large columns of smoke were seen to ascend; but the torrent of rain put it out. On the steps below were discovered considerable quantities of the pitch and tar which had melted and descended.
