FROM THE AURORA.
GRUMBLERS.
THE greatest grumblers, against measures and men, in this country, are Englishmen. fortune hunters and British factors; they keep alive by their mercantile patronage, the greatest part of the hostility in the news papers. These men, after having lived here a few years, constantly grumbling, send for their families and relations to partake of the blessings, enjoyed and derived from the existence of the government they are forever complaining of. They are eternally finding fault with every thing we do—foreign embassies and domestic appointments receive alike the weight of their displeasure.
If these men are attacked for their ingratitude and impertinent interference, they avow their willingness to live in this country and their unwillingness to go to England and enjoy the blessings they talk of, and say, that they merely object to our government.
What a weak and silly pretence.
Turkey is a fine climate—Greece has been the seat of every thing noble and great.
A man may breathe comfortably under the sun of Africa
And. in Britain the climate and soil may be superior.
Then. why don't these Englishmen go to Turkey or Greece, which are fine countries & -why don't they stay in England, which they say has an excellent government? why do they commit violence to their feelings by remaining in this country under such a government as ours?
Oh! sir. this is a better country, to trade in, and get rich.
And, pray, what makes this a better country?
There is no yellow fever in England, why then prefer Philadelphia, New York. or Baltimore?
Why prefer the yellow fever of America to the liberty and blessings under Geo III
Silly men—it is to the principles and the government of this country. which you are forever ridiculing and abusing, that you owe your consequence and your riches, If the measures you clamor for, navy and fortifications and the like. were introduced here, where would be your profits of trade, your riches and comforts?
Was the government of Britain, which you so much admire and extol, established in this country, then you would have all the attendant blessings of English fraternity, lordly high ps. clergy, tythes, princes, nobles, taxes, lord Melbourne's. press gangs, and millions starving in poor houses and gaols.
Then the causes, which drove you to this country, from Britain, would be here also.
Where, then, would you fly to enjoy the blessings you have here, and for which you are so shamefully ungrateful. Where could you be raised from that original insignificance, in which you have remained had not the government of America given full scope to your industry, and ranked you in the class of citizens.
The land of the Hottentots, Algiers, or Constantinople, were open to us, we could there find a refuge from British oppression and taxes.
Then pray gentlemen, go there—you flock here as clerks. agents, and hawkers of Manchester stripes or Birmingham cutlery: you find this country a new world indeed; you profit by the immense advantages enjoyed under a really free government, make your fortunes. and then ape the manners of the gentry of England—you talk of rank, blood, and family as if you really had every pretension of either—you corrupt the morals of our youth—and never cease to abuse and ridicule the government which enabled you to throw off the character of a grub and assume the gaiety of the butterfly
Do gentlemen, at least when you have made your fortunes, return to the blessings of Britain, and suffer us to manage our affairs in our own way.
