The Evangelical Association. At the session of the Evangelical association in Philadelphia, a few days since, Bishop Cummins defined the three cardinal errors of the ritualistic party to be, the false doctrines of the real presence, the sacerdotal character of the Lord's supper, and sacerdotal character of the priesthood and personal confession and absolution. He said that on entering a church in Providence, R. I., erected to the memory of Bishop Henshaw, he was horrified to find a regular altar, not a communion table, adorned with flowers and candles. There is, he continued, now in existence a secret society in the Episcopal church, which is called the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament numbering three hundred and seventy-seven associates, of which sixty-five are ministers. At one of the meetings of the confraternity the officiating clergyman sang Animi Christi, which was composed by Ignatius Loyola, the founder of Jesuitism. The bishop lamented the progress that ritualism was surely and steadily making, and could see no remedy for it except a revision of the prayer-book. Judge Chambers, he remarked, once said he would like to add to the litany the single prayer; "From all future changes in the prayer- book, good Lord deliver us." He, however, would only change a single word, and that word was priest." Its eradication would reform and revise the whole prayer- book, but he had no hope that such reform would ever be accomplished.

Bishop Cummins defined the three cardinal errors of the ritualistic party as the false doctrines of the real presence, the sacerdotal character of the Lord's supper, and sacerdotal character of the priesthood and personal confession and absolution. He described being horrified by an altar in a Providence church built in memory of Bishop Henshaw. He mentioned a secret society in the Episcopal church called the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament with 377 associates, 65 ministers, where a clergyman sang Animi Christi composed by Ignatius Loyola. He lamented ritualism's progress and suggested revising the prayer-book by eradicating the word 'priest,' though he had no hope for such reform. He referenced Judge Chambers' remark on adding a prayer against changes to the prayer-book.
