ITALIAN COURAGE
(San Bernardino Sun)
The Italians are redeeming themselves. It was never fair to accuse them of cowardice when they were fighting in a cause which they knew was wrong. Now that they have something worthwhile to shed their blood for, they are showing how Italians can fight, even in the face of great handicaps.
From Chiasso, on the Swiss-Italian frontier, the other day came a memorable report. So fierce was the determination to expel the Germans that Italian troops armed only with bayonets charged in masses against German tanks, and 6000 out of 8000 were killed. At Parma when the fight became hopeless 33 Italian officers took their own lives rather than surrender. In Trento, which was held by the Germans, they roamed the streets hurling hand grenades and cutting high tension wires to drop on German tanks. The Italians can be expected to fight more earnestly for their own liberty than they did in taking liberty away from other people.
