Full Text

Mean Affair.—The poem of Barbara Frietchie offends the feelings of the authorities of Frederick, Maryland, and they have taken the meanest possible path to blot out her memory—a thing they never could have imagined to succeed in had their wisdom been as keen as their spite. They first passed an ordinance to widen and straighten Carroll creek : and then decided that the Frietchie house was in the line of the proposed improvement; and then so straightened the creek that it made three sharp angles in order to reach the spot where the old house stood. The house has been removed, and laborers are now digging some ten feet below the original foundation. But the spot on which it stood will be pointed out when the memories of the Frederick magnates will be buried so deep in oblivion that no resurrection is possible.
