Mr. CARTER,
This being the Season in which Bathing and Swimming are much in Use, you are requested to publish the following Method of recovering drowned Persons:
HUMANITAS.
TAKE a sufficient Quantity of Pot-Ashes, or for Want of Pot-Ashes take dry Salt (but rather Pot Ashes, if to be had) throw them upon a Bed, about three inches deep: Upon this Layer of Ashes place the drowned Person, and then sprinkle upon the Party another Layer of Ashes, of about two Inches deep, put a Cap upon the Head, containing a good Quantity of the Ashes, and round the Throat a Stocking filled with the same; lay the Blankets of the Bed over all, but so contrived as not to prevent Respiration on the Person's recovering.
In about Half an Hour the Pulse of the Patient will be found to beat, and by Degrees the Senses will be recovered. Give the Person a Cordial, and continue him in the Ashes seven or eight Hours afterwards; during which Time the Water will come away by the urinary Passage in amazing Quantities.
In December, 1758, Dr. Moulin, an eminent Physician of Edinburgh, recovered a poor Girl by this Method who had been 7 Hours under Water, and was to all Appearance, when laid in the Ashes, utterly dead.
