Potofsky Asks Aid For Israel

New York (LPA) - President Jacob Potofsky of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, just back from Israel, called upon the American labor movement, as well as the government and private groups to give financial assistance to the new nation,

"Israel is a citadel of democracy in the middle east," he declared last week.

Potofsky, who with Nat'l Maritime Union President Joseph Curran went on a special inspection trip to Palestine for CIO. said that he'll shortly file a full report with President Philip Murray.

Housing and other pressing Israel needs will require about $800,000,000 of outside aid in the next four years. the ACWA chief said. He expressed confidence that the AFL and CIO will both help raise the funds. (The Int'l Ladies Garment Workers Union-AFL two weeks ago set aside $1,000,000 to help house newly arrived refugees in Israel.)

Potofsky praised the work of Histadrut, the Israeli Federation of Labor. The cooperatives that it operates make up about 20% of the country's economy, he disclosed.
