The Mint of the United States was established by act of Congress, April 2, 1792; but it was not put into full operation until 1795. Philadelphia being the seat of government at that time the Mint was established in that city and never moved therefrom. The Philadelphia Mint remained the only one until 1832, when Congress created three branches.
