"Unhappy Differences."
It is related that during one of the most exciting seasons of Gen. Jackson's administration, the old Hero was waited upon by a devout presbyterian clergyman, who deeply sympathised with the old man passionate, in the perplexities by which he was beset. Desirous of imparting to the harrassed President the best counsel in the world, he broached his errand by the inquiry as to what subject pressed with greatest force upon his mind? To which the General meekly replied: The unhappy differences in the Presbyterian Church!
We are forcibly reminded of this incident by the "unhappy differences" which are now rending the "harmonious" locofoco party of Ohio. It grieves us to contemplate these things; but our solemn duty, as chroniclers of passing events, leaves us no alternative.
Our readers are aware that throughout two livelong nights of the past week, and after the most diligent drilling by experienced drill sergeants, the party in the Legislature were unable to come to any decision as to their preference! The anxious aspirants for Senatorial emoluments (honors are out of the question with them,) spared no known appliance to further the ends of their ambition. Thirty-seven ballotings were had, and the caucus adjourned sine die, to meet again at the sound of the gong. The next morning ALLEN was seen on his way down the Scioto, McDARY was off to Cincinnati, MANASSA PENNYPACKER turned in to "gathering volume" by giving vent to various quarters to his pent up matter; and the other candidates hold their breath "for a time."
