JAMESTOWN.—We learn with pleasure that Mr John H. Weeden has been elected a Representative from Jamestown. Mr Weeden is a native of Jamestown, and was educated at the College, in this town, where he continued some time as Tutor. His fellow citizens, justly estimating his worth and abilities, elected him to the House last May. Mr E. R. Potter immediately singled him out as a young man of intelligence and promise, who must be brought over to the party in this State, opposed to the true interests of the people, or be put down. The former could not be effected, and the latter was resorted to. Messrs Potter, Bull, Updike, &c contended that Mr Weeden was not entitled to his seat, because he had been a Tutor in Providence College, though, in fact, his legal residence had always been in Jamestown. The other side, with their usual apathy, suffered Mr Potter to have his way, and turn Mr Weeden out of his seat. During the discussion Mr Potter assailed this young gentleman with a coarseness and virulence, which he and his friends will not soon forget. Mr Weeden, who contended for his right to a seat, replied to Mr Potter with a happy combination of independence and modesty. Since then Mr W. has permanently resided in Jamestown, and we presume that Mr Potter will not be able to vacate his seat, at the next session.
