PROFESSOR EVERETT.

A letter from Washington thus describes the oratorical powers of the celebrated Professor Everett, of Harvard University, who has recently preached in the Capitol; "I took a good position to see and hear, and neither word nor action escaped me. Amongst the audience, I observed three members of the Cabinet, and many of the most eminent debaters of both Houses of Congress; and certainly I never heard higher or more unqualified admiration bestowed on any pulpit performance. Some thought him less eloquent than Mr. Holley, whom I never heard. For my own part, it struck me as the most polished and sublime discourse I ever heard. He must indeed have studied profoundly the best specimens, and the most perfect models of ancient and modern oratory. In the picture he presented to our imagination of nations, in their rise and progress to power, corruption and decay, there was an awful sublimity, which I cannot describe."
