World Polar Flight

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)

Bill Odom, who spends a lot of his time trying to set odd flying records, has a couple more in mind.

First, he wants another crack at a non-stop, light plane record from Honolulu to New York. And after that a round-the-world junket, via the poles, in a four-engine plane.

Odom, who got only as far as Oakland last Jan. 31 when he made his first try at the Honolulu-New York hop, arrived back in Oakland yesterday. He is shipping his Beachcraft plane, disassembled, to Hawaii Thursday. He has installed new gasoline tanks for longer range.

The round-the-world flight he has in mind would be made in a transport version of the four-engined Liberator bomber. Odom said he was planning to fly via Anchorage, the North Pole, Paris, New Zealand, the South Pole, South America and back to his Oakland starting point, a distance of 28,000 miles.

Odom has set no date for the polar flight, nor did he say who was backing it.
