Public Schools.—To-day we paid a visit to the Gold Hill Public Schools. In each one of the departments visited a good degree of order was noticeable, and the pupils seemed to be making fair progress in their studies. The attendance in the various departments is as follows: Professor James' department, 31; Mrs. Gaston's, 53; Miss McDonnell's, 90; Miss Holman's school on the Divide, 50. Total, 224.

In Professor James' department instruction is given in reading, orthography, penmanship, arithmetic, English grammar, geography, history, algebra and Latin. The class in Latin recite at noon. The advanced class in arithmetic have gone nearly through the text book (Eaton's High School). The classes in the other branches named have progressed correspondingly. The pupils in the intermediate department (Mrs. Gaston's) receive instruction in arithmetic, written and mental, geography, reading, spelling, etc. The most advanced class in arithmetic (Eaton's Common School) has progressed to compound numbers. The scholars in this department are receiving careful training, and are getting along finely. A very interesting department of the public school is that presided over by Miss Mary McDonnell. About 90 young sagebrushers assemble there daily. The majority of them wear bright, intellectual countenances. Miss McDonnell is meeting with good success in teaching the young idea how to shoot, although she is encumbered with more pupils than one teacher can well do justice to. Ere long, it is to be hoped, she will be allowed an assistant.
