Roy Cohn, one of New York's most famous lawyers - he sprung into prominence as one of the "bright young men" of the Army-McCarthy hearings - is about to make headlines that even he does not know about yet. And big headlines. . . June Havoc and Red Buttons are the town's newest happy-looking couple. . .If you think only Central Park and areas on the West Side are dangerous for strolling purposes after dark, ask Arch Oboler. He was mugged the other night at Park Ave. and 48th St. Luckily he lost only his watch and his wallet, but he was uninjured. He told only a couple of friends about the incident, as a warning to be careful walking even in that district after nightfall. . . Shubert Alley hears the Theatre Guild has revived its plans to produce Langston Hughes' "Tambourines of Glory" and Barbara McNair is being considered to play the leading role.
Kay Starr really doesn't have much luck at matrimony. Friends say her recent marriage to Earl Callieut - the singer's fifth husband - is having huge problems already. . .More mystery at Chicago's Villa Venice. Dinah Shore postponed her engagement in radio and television listings
A local press agent has a funny problem - funny to everybody but the management to scramble frantically for a "name" replacement. The quiz question: How will that effect Frank Sinatra's agreement to be a happy smiling little guest on Dinah's television show? Will he get even by postponing on her, or have they worked everything out in harmony?
The ever-inventive population of stripteasers now has among its members a lady who calls herself Astro Naughty. . .Just to keep the record straight: Shirley MacLaine WAS delayed getting into New York, but she DID get here and made personal appearances at several theatres to help ballyhoo the opening of her newest movie. The snafu seems to have occurred at the ad agency involved, when someone ordered radio personalities to delete all mention of Shirley
Rita Hayworth left for the West Coast by train the other day, saying she doesn't mind flying but she has a gang of scripts to read and the best place to do it is on that three-day cross-country trip. Judging from the play she picked for this season - and then exited from - Rita ought to get somebody else to read the scripts for her. That one lasted exactly one performance on Broadway.
The pretty girl with Barry Goldwater at the Stork Club was his daughter, just turned 18. . .A Hollywood trade paper front-paged a story from Formosa reporting that Chiang Kai-shek had ordered the defense ministry to show 20th Century-Fox's "The 300 Spartans" to the 45,000 men of the armed forces, as an inspiration. Meanwhile, our Chinese sources have it that Chou En-lai is showing "The Longest Day" to his troops, and while everybody is at the movies Nehru will counterattack. . .
Quote of the week from Elvis Presley: It is important for me to surround myself with people who can give happiness and receive happiness. Because if I've learned anything I've learned that you only pass through this life once. Jack. You don't come back for an encore." (That's all right to tell Jack, Elvis, but how about Charlie Brown; can you be sure HE won't come back? or Bruce, or Clyde, or some of those other fellows?)
